  16. I think I've figured it out ... the way to save the Amiga, port the OS to
  17. PowerPC, build an object-oriented interface to the operating system and
  18. jump back to the front of the technological wave.  Amiga Technologies 
  19. should evolve the Amiga into the first Network Computer (NC) based on a
  20. Java run-time system.  Both IBM and Oracle (and others) have a commitment
  21. to develop NCs by the middle of next year, for sale around the US$1000 mark.
  22. The idea is to use low-cost hardware running a resource-lean OS as a Java
  23. execution system.

  25. The current AmigaOS would provide the ideal foundation for one of these
  26. NCs.  It could provide the core services for the Java runtime system :
  27. light-weight threads, a ready made GUI, dynamic linked libraries, 
  28. synchronisation primitives, a file system for local caching, datatypes
  29. for different image/data formats.  A TCP/IP stack would have to be added
  30. and a sockets library, but otherwise the standard AmigaOS could provide
  31. all the services used by the standard Java class heirarchy.

  33. Amiga Technologies have stated that they want to develop a set-top box -
  34. here's the perfect opportunity.  There would be so many benefits for the
  35. Amiga if a deal could be signed with, for example, IBM.  And lets face it,
  36. if AT try to go it alone, the next generation of Amigas will have to compete
  37. head-to-head with these machines.  I say lets be a part of it!
